HomeNews Flash A A Search All categories County News Tools RSS Notify Me Categories All Categories County News News Flash County News Posted on: November 19, 2018Property Tax Homestead Notice Blue Earth County residents need to be enlightened of an important property tax homestead notice, which could stupefy the value of property tax they pay in 2019 and could stupefy their eligibility for a property tax refund.Persons should contact their county assessor to file a homestead using on or surpassing December 17, 2018, if one of the pursuit applies;They purchased property in the past year and if they, or a qualifying relative, occupy the property for homestead purposes on December 1, 2018; orThey, or a qualifying relative, occupy a property for homestead purposes on December 1, 2018 and the property was previously classified as a non-homestead.A qualifying relative for homestead purposes depends on the types of property. For residential property, a qualifying relative can be a parent, stepparent, child, stepchild, grandparent, grandchild, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, nephew, or niece of the owner. This relationship may be by thoroughbred or marriage. For agricultural property, a qualifying relative can be a child, grandchild, sibling, or parent of the owner or the spouse of the owner.Once a person has been granted the homestead classification, no remoter applications are necessary unless they are specifically requested by the county assessor.They must moreover contact the assessor by December 17, 2018 if they are the property owner, or a qualifying relative of the property owner, and the use of the property has reverted during the past year.If a person should sell, move, or for any reason no longer qualify for the homestead classification, they are required to notify the county assessor within 30 days of the transpiration in homestead status.
